Skipper Notes:

Weir to left - in river semi flood conditions it is necessary, when heading downstream and turning to starboard, to ensure that the boat is not swept onto the 'knuckle end'.

Take care that, since the bow will then be in slack water but the stern still in the flow, the bow does not end up striking the UPSTREAM wall !

Obviously in flood conditions, boats should not be moved on the river !

'Dark Arches'  (River Lock to Left)

Skipper Notes:

In river semi flood conditions when entering River Lock (on the immediate left). it is necessary to head for the 'UPSTREAM' wall of the lock entrance.

River flow should then bring the boat alongside the downstream wall as the boat approaches the tail gates of the lock.

With a private boat, the lock can then be operated as normal (if the lock is to be emptied, ensure that the boat is securely moored against the flow from the gate sluices).
When penning up the lock, ALWAYS use ground sluices first - the lock is deep and gate paddles can easily result in the boat flooding !

With a passenger (trip) boat, a 'ground' crew will probably have opened the tail gates in preparation for the boats arrival.

When cruising DOWNSTREAM in flood conditions, ensure plenty of 'way on' and head for the centre of the river (otherwise the river will push the boat into the corner below the lock entrance).

Obviously in flood conditions, boats should not be moved on the river !
